Monthly Program Schedule

This is the 2025 August Calendar for the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center. It lists the times and activities that are occurring at the center in a grid view.

EXERCISE

Strong for Life   -- Mondays and Thursdays at 10am (Zoom & In-Person)

Energize your body and mind with our twice-weekly Strong for Life exercise classes. Strong for Life was developed by Providence physical therapists as an easy-to-follow routine designed to improve balance, strength and flexibility. The routine can adjust to your needs by choosing one of four levels - all movements can be done in standing or sitting positions. 

 

Tai Chi, 1st & 3rd Monday at 3pm (In-Person)

Join us for a half-hour of mindful movement with Caz! Take a moment out of your day to work toward improved blood pressure, better balance, greater flexibility, increased stamina, and stronger muscles with this gentle exercise. 

 

Nia Movement, 2nd & 4th Monday at 3pm (In-person)

Join us for this fun cardio class based on simple dance moves, great music, and fun! Great for dancers and those of us with two left feet, this class will get your heart beating and laughing. 

 

Gentle Slow Flow Yoga   -- Tuesdays at 11am (In-Person)

Learn, grow and find steadiness and strength through gentle yoga. Practice poses modified to fit every body. Be part of this playful supportive group as we explore the yoga mat, the chair and our feet. Bring your mat and a small blanket.

 

Line Dancing, 1st & 3rd Thursdays at 1:30pm (In-person)

Talk about making a workout fun! Shuffle, kick, and grapevine your way through this high energy class. In this class you’ll learn basic line dance moves and routines that we’ll build upon each class. Have fun, move your body, and learn a new dance!

 

Cardio Drumming, Thursdays at 2pm (In-Person)

Are you looking for a new way to get a workout? Is your exercise routine getting boring? Are you plain just not excited to work out? Boy, have we got a class for you! Join this upbeat and irreverent class as we beat rhythms on yoga balls along to music. It’s a bit silly and a great workout! Seated or standing options

 

Chair Aerobics --  Wednesdays at 11 am

Keep your body moving in this chair-based aerobics class! We move from our head to our toes in this engaging exercise class. (Free)

 

Chair Yoga, Fridays at 10:45am (In-Person)

Join us for this gentle and safe yoga practice in a chair.  You will move though physical postures, breathing practices, and short meditations to harness the relaxation and emotional benefits of yoga. This yoga practice will support and build balance, strength, mobility and executive functions of the brain. Beginners and all fitness levels welcome.

Mystery Monday – First Monday of the Month at 4pm (In-person & Zoom)

Indulge your inner sleuth by joining our monthly mystery book club! Each month we’ll go on a crime solving adventure with authors from near and far, covering a range of mystery interests. We're currently reading: Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. Get a jump on the next book for our August  4th meeting: The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson.

Men’s Coffee -- Monday through Friday at 9:30 am

Join the guys every week-day morning to start your day off with coffee, a sweet treat, and plenty of conversation to chew on. (Suggested donation of $1 towards coffee).

 

Cancer Conversations  - 3rd Monday of the month at 10:30am (7/21, 8/18, 9/15)

Cancer is insidious and seemingly omnipresent in our lives, leaving so many with experiences, thoughts, and emotions that we want to talk about. Sharing your journey, along with questions, joys, and frustrations with a small group of others who are experiencing or who have gone through treatment for cancer, can help build support, community, and help to sort out what can be overwhelming. Let's Talk – First Wednesday of the month at 10:30am

Let’s Talk offers a setting for open, honest, and facilitated discussion on topics unique to people over the age of 60. These interactive conversations provide a forum for discussion as well as an opportunity to explore new possibilities, resources, and connection. In partnership with Cascadia Health.

    Resilience: Bouncing Back – How well do you bounce back from adversity? Resiliency has been shown to be key in positive mental health. Come and talk with others about developing resilience in the face of stress and change. CLICK HERE or call 503-625-5644 to register.

    End of Life Decisions – Considering end-of-life realities can be overwhelming and easily set aside. Let’s talk about making plans and asking questions about these decisions. Genealogy Club: Research, Stories, & Finding, - 1st Wednesday of the month at 1:30pm             starts 8/6 

Are you an ancestry sleuth or a genealogy hound? Have you traced your family through time to the Aztecs, the Huns, the Tudors? Are you just getting started in your quest to trace your family through history and are looking for ideas an inspiration? Coffee & Chat: Spanish! - First Friday of the month @10:30am

PLAY

Train Dominoes - Tuesdays at 1:30pm 

Try your hand at this fun and easy-to-learn game! Using dominos, you'll make your train (and the train of others) longer until you run out of Dominos in your hand. Join us whether you've played for years or never before!

 

Hand & Foot - Mondays at 1:15pm 

This classic Canasta variant is fun for everyone! Easy to learn and fun to play, this is a card game that we can play with 3 or 30 players so join the game!

 

Five Crowns - Mondays at 1:15pm

Do you love playing Rummy AND Golf (card golf, no clubs or greens for this one)? Have you not heard of one or the either but just like to play cards and have fun? Join us for Five Crowns – a card game that combines the runs and books of rummy and the low point goals of golf for a fun easy to learn and easy to play game. 

 

Pinochle -- Tuesdays & Thursdays at 1:00pm 

Are you a fan of this trick-taking, Ace-Ten card game and looking for a fun group to join? Look no further! Spend your afternoons laughing as you play double-deck partner Pinochle. New to Pinochle? Our group is happy to teach as they play!

 

Mah-Jongg -- Wednesdays at 1:30 pm 

Join other regular Mah-Jongg players following the American Mah-Jongg Association rules at our twice-weekly games. (Free)

 

Bridge --  Wednesdays at 12:30 pm

 We play non-duplicate party bridge every Wednesday! We'd love to have  you join but please call ahead (503-625-5644) as we try to have multiples of four for best play.  ($1)

 

BINGO Fridays – Fridays at 1:15pm 

Do you absolutely love Bingo? Have you never played Bingo a day in your life and are curious what the hype is all about? Join us for this classic and fun game of luck and chance. Every Friday we spend an hour playing all versions of Bingo. 

 

Scrabble – 2nd & 4th Fridays at 2:30pmpm

Do you love the NYT Spelling Bee? Do you have a love of letters, words, and games! If you’re not already a Scrabble fan, you soon will be! Join us the last Friday of each month for this fun brain teaser of a game!

 

CREATE

Open Art Studio - Tuesdays at 1:30pm

Celebrate your creativity with others. Practice and hone your skills with this supportive group of artists. This group is participant driven so bring your materials and tools to work on whatever project you feel like – watercolor, pastels, pencils, oils, acrylic, mixed media. (Free)

 

Hooks and Needles - Mondays at 1:30pm

 Already a crochet or knitting wizard? Come along for the fun of it! Craft, chat, and have a great time! Just beginning but you can crochet a chain and a flat square? Come on down! This is a fun and open group to show off what you're working on, ask advice on problem stitches, or just be with other needle crafters. (Free)

 

Woodcarvers -- 1st & 3rd Tuesdays at 1:00 pm

Join this creative and talented group to learn, grow, or just have fun with a craft. If you’re an experienced woodcarver, bring your tools and project. If you are new to the art, please come to a meeting and learn what tools you might need and see what woodcarving is all about! (Free)

 

Write Your Life Story -- Wednesdays at 9:30 am (In-person)

Have you been wanting some support and direction as you recollect and commit your memories to paper?  This is the group for you! Each week the members of the group write a story from their life and then share them with the group. If you’re looking for an environment free of criticism to read your story, come and learn from each other’s past. Always welcoming new members.

Foot Care – First Wednesday & Thursday of the Month

Amanda Morris, RN is back and taking foot care appointments at the Marjorie Stewart Center! Please call to make your appointments. Appointments are 30 minutes long. ($40 paid at time of service).

 

Tech Help – Mondays at 1:00pm

Have a cellphone that is acting up, laptop or tablet that just won't behave, or any other number of technology issues? Let our volunteer tech guys help! Call the center at 503-625-5644 or stop by to schedule a one-on-one appointment for help with your technology problem or for a how-to demonstration. (Free)

 

Medicare Counseling (SHIBA) - 3rd Wednesdays from 12pm to 2pm, by appointment

On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 12pm to 2pm, in-person Washington County Senior Health Insurance Benefits counselors are at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center to help those on or new to Medicare make informed choices about benefit plan options. Counselors are highly trained and certified volunteers who will work with you to review plan options, including Advantage Plans, Medigap supplemental insurance policies, and prescription drug plans. They can also assist in understanding a bill or fee charges, help file a grievance or appeal for a change, explain timelines, and ensure you are receiving all possible benefits you may be eligible for. Blood Pressure Checks – 1st & 3rd Thursdays at 11:00 am

Check in with our visiting nurse to keep an eye on your blood pressure. (Free)

 

AARP Tax Service – February 1st through April 15th

AARP is back to provide tax preparation assistance. Call 503-625-5644 after January 15th to make an appointment and for more information.

 

The Pearl Room Mental Health Support (Free)

 

The Program to Engage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS)

Have you been feeling down or blue? Have you lost interest in doing things? If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions and are 65 years or older, there may be something we can do to help. Call 503-625-5644 to register.

                -The PEARLS Program teaches you skills to manage the unpleasant feelings associated with depression.

                - Local coaches meet with you individually to help you identify and solve problems that are linked to feeling the way you do.

                - Learn ways to become more physically & socially active.

 

Circle of Friends

Are you feeling isolated or lonely? Are you new to the area and looking to connect? Have you gotten separated from your social life during Covid? The Circle of Friends group is geared towards older adults (aged 65+) in need of more social support and connection to their community.

The group meets for eight-weeks with a facilitator who will help guide the group in discussion, activities, and fun. These activities and discussions are based on participants interests. Call 503-625-5644 to register.

 

One-on-One Counseling - By Appointment

Life can be overwhelming at times and sometimes we just need someone to talk to. We are happy to partner with Pacific University to offer one-on-one therapeutic counseling to the older adults in our community. All 503-625-5644 to make an appointment. 

 

Supported Aging - Thursdays at 2:30pm

This is a drop-in conversation group to discuss any of the many troubles we face as we age. Being older gives us many unique perspectives of experience and with it, some universal problems. Join the group to share challenges and find support with others as well as tools from our head counselor, Joan Laguzza, LCSW specialized in working with older adults. We will work together to identify solutions and offer a supportive space for listening and problem solving.

 

GRIEF SUPPORT - Fridays at 11am                                              

There is no normal way to grieve, it strikes us in different yet similar ways. Join this peer-facilitated group to find support from others who are experiencing the loss of someone they love. This safe and welcoming environment provides the space for you to share your feelings, experiences, and memories while navigating your loss.

Regular Monthly Activities (on hiatus)

Social Dancing -- Wednesdays at 1:30 pm

Kick up your heels to the Charles Guerin Band as they play jazz, samba, waltzes, salsa, and more! Have a wonderful afternoon making new friends, having a sweet snack, and moving around the dance floor. ($5)

 

Rogue Bocce -- Tuesdays at 10:30am  (In-Person) 

We're excited to take a step outside to roll some bocce balls! Rogue bocce is the same game you know and love (or maybe have never heard of before) but without the court. We'll follow the jack (or boccino) around our beautiful grounds to see who can earn the most points. When the weather does not cooperate, we'll move indoors to play Cornhole. Cornhole is a yard game that has become popular in yards all over the country. It is basically competitive beanbag toss. Try your best over or under hand to see how you score! (Weather permitting)

 

Open Sew -- 2nd Thursday at 1:30pm 

Breakout of your quilting room and sew with others or join us to use some space to spread out and enjoy sewing in a creative and supportive atmosphere. Show off what you’re working on, see others’ creations, and have fun. Bring your machine and work alongside others on your own project. (Free)

 

Caring Support Group - Tuesdays at 3:30pm

Relationships with our significant other change and evolve over time, especially through aging and new diagnoses.  It can be difficult to adapt. Find support from peers who are facing similar challenges and experiences by joining our facilitated program to learn from each other.
